Local residents
will have a new way of getting fruits and vegetables straight from farm
fields and orchards. Starting July 23, the Bedford Farmers' Market will
be open every Tuesday afternoon from 3:30 to 7 p.m. through Oct. 30.
Its location is just off Nashua Road at Riley Field.
The farmers' market
will be made up of local farmers bringing in their own fruits, vegetables,
herbs and other farm products. There will also be specialty food product
vendors selling items such as preserves, coffees, cheeses, baked goods,
and much more, all locally produced.
The opening is
timed to coincide with the peak summertime produce. Items will be remarkably
fresh and guaranteed to be picked that day or the day before, the result
being riper and fresher produce than that purchased in any supermarket.
Buyers will also have the opportunity to speak with the local farmer
who grew that very produce.
Some of the farms
are certified organic, some grow a wide variety of vegetables, and others
focus on specific items. All are looking forward to the start of the
Bedford market and getting to meet folks from the area.
To celebrate the
opening of the market, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at 3:30
p.m. and all are welcome to attend. Among the special events planned
for the market season, two rare Shetland miniature ponies will be on
site on July 23, restaurant owner Scott Kinney will do a live cooking
demonstration on July 30, and Andi the Clown wil be face painting and
performing on Aug. 13. Ideas from community members are encouraged.
