To the Editor:
It's hard to believe
but after months of hard work and a lot of discussion and debate, Bedford
will have its own Farmers' Market! How wonderful it has been to watch
the market come alive and develop into something much greater than we
had anticipated for the season.
There are so many
people to thank, it's difficult to know where to begin. Those wonderful,
hard-working farmers, eager to be part of a Bedford farmers' market,
were our "seed," the beginning. Once we were satisfied we
had an ample supply of fresh produce for the market, we started to contact
specialty product vendors and once again found tremendous enthusiasm
for a Bedford market. Thank you all for your commitment. We can't wait
for our community to meet you and for you to get to know us each Tuesday
afternoon.
Thank you Lakewood
Educational Farm and Doodlebug and her baby Biscuit, for agreeing to
make our opening day on July 23 even more special. Lakewood has generously
volunteered to bring more of its exotic farm animals to the market throughout
the season. We are so excited that Scott Kinney, owner of Unwine'D,
a funky restaurant wine bar, has volunteered to share his culinary talents
with a cooking demonstration at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, at the
market.
Without the talents
and dedication of the steering committee for the market, it would have
been impossible to have a market this season. To Kirsten Romano, Greg
Rehm, Linda Lin, and newcomer Jill Powers, we thank you, applaud you,
and appreciate you because we know all you have done to make this market
a reality. You are all extraordinary. Special thanks to Bill Winn of
Fresh Joe coffee and a vendor at the market, for volunteering to be
the market manager. Bill's endless energy will serve the market well.
Our community and
corporate sponsors readily agreed to help us out with start-up funding.
Their financial commitment to the farmers' market was very important.
We sincerely thank The Bedford Garden Club, the Bedford Newcomers' Club,
Centrix Bank and Trust and Bedford Ambulatory Surgical Center, our two
founding sponsors, for their much appreciate generosity. Thank you Goedecke
Decorating Center for your donation of paint and brushes, Liberty Hill
Construction for making wooden signs, and GDS (Mike Robinson and Joe
Motta) for the great banner. Each donation is so meaningful and appreciated.
The value of the
incredible coverage of the Farmers' Market by The Bedford Bulletin
is enormous. The local media was one of the first entities that we approached
about the Farmers' Market and your enthusiasm and support nurtured our
commitment to the idea. The service you provide to our community is
so important. You contribute so much to local grass-roots endeavors
and we thank you for your contribution to the market.
To the town officials
of Bedford and specifically Keith Hickey, our town manager, and Brian
Ross, director of parks and recreation, our heartfelt thanks. You said
"yes" from the very beginning, endured our endless requests
and drop-in visits and never failed to help us when we needed it. Special
thanks (as always) to Martha Gaudes for your enthusiasm and help.
There are so many
others to thank, it is impossible to mention you all. Thank you for
your offers of help, your encouragement, your suggestions and your artistic
talents.
We have had so
much fun putting this market together with the help of so many others.
We can still use more volunteers, especially for next year's market.
The possibilities are endless. We invite you to join us and most important
of all, we look forward to seeing you at the market on Tuesdays!
