Handy tips for farmer's market shopping

When you're shopping at a farmers' market, it's best to It's best to bring your own bags and some rigid containers for fragile produce like berries.As you buy, pack things carefully--you don't want your watermelon bearing down on your peaches. If you live in a hot climate, you might want to bring an ice chest to keep things cool until you get home. Bring lots of small bills and change. Don't buy at the first stand--part of the pleasure is the shopping experience, and you don't know where the freshest produce and best prices will be found. Shop often and get to know the growers, so you'll know who has the freshest stuff. And follow your nose. The air-conditioned atmosphere of a supermarket inhibits the scents of produce; in an open-air market, one sniff can tell you how ripe that cantaloupe is.
